Thanks so much to Catherine Daly who completed SEAI workshops with the whole school over the last two days. She has a fantastic skill in making science fun, interesting and interactive for all ages. She made the children aware of how to conserve energy and how to reduce our carbon footprint using small steps. She did something different with every class. Some classes made their own Carbon Dioxide, others made rockets and some looked the energy released when am alka-seltzer reacts with water. Every class really enjoyed the experience and felt the time went way too fast.
Looking at pH here, we added an indicator to water and blew into the straws and saw the now green coloured water turn a yellow/red colour indicating that the carbon dioxide we are exhaling is an acid.
In this video, you can see the baking soda (base) mixing with vinegar (acid) causes a chemical reaction which produces Carbon Dioxide and causes the balloon to inflate.
4th Class studied all about light-natural and artificial. They learned how the sun influences the weather and they looked at light sources and how some materials can be transparent, translucent or opaque. They completed a number of experiments based on light. One of these involved investigating how we produce white light using a spinning colour wheel with the seven colours of the spectrum.
5th Class learned all about the work of an astrounaut wheh they watched a live webinar with famous astronaut Chris Hadfield. They even got to ask sdome of their own questions.
