ICT-PowerPoint Presentation
4th Class learned about the Egyptians and the Aztecs in History in the last few months. When asked to do a project on both the Aztecs and the Egyptians, a lot of the students opted to complete it as a PowerPoint presentation. All the students were blown away with the different transitions the students used in their presentations.
First Lego League
Thanks to funding from the Creative Clusters initiative, the children in Ms O’Shea’s 4th class are participating in the First Lego League Masterpiece programme. This year's Masterpiece theme focuses on the role STEM plays in the Arts (STEAM). The children will share their passions, hobbies and interests in creative ways using Lego. Thanks to Ms Rose O’Connor for taking on this project and taking on this 10 session theme with 4th class. In the next few sessions, children will work as a team, connect with iPads to create sound effects and lighting appropriate to their project and hopefully include moving mechanisms too. Already the children’s imaginations are impressing us with ideas we hadn’t anticipated.
Using Microscopes for Science Week
We were lucky enough to get to use microscopes when the scientists from MTU brought them in for science week. We got to look at DNA under the microscope, get a close up view of the different insects on display etc.
Skin Deep
During the Science Week Expo, the children got to check the hydration level of their skin using TEWAMETER machine. The TEWAMETER is a tool to measure trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). This measures your skin barrier-your shield. High TEWL values=damaged skin shield.
VR Headsets
As part of the Science week demo, 5th and 6th got to explore our 'Day in STEM' virtual experience on a virtual reality headset. They got to use hand controllers and a virtual reality headset to interact with a graphic environment where they could choose to build a virtual engine on Mars and experience Mechanical Engineering, help an unwell dog in Veterinary Nursing or construct a bridge in Civil Engineering.
Robotics
5th and 6th Class got a hands on experience building simple robots and interacting with the robot via phone to control it. They worked in their groups following instructions to make the robotics and then programmed using phones.
